The Chelan County Public Utility District is located in north central Washington State. It is owned by its customers and governed by a Board of Commissioners elected by the customers. The local customer-owners of the PUD receive dividends in the form of reduced rates for service. The Chelan County PUD owns and operates the United States second largest non-federal, publicly owned hydro-generating system. Two of its hydro projects, Rocky Reach and Rock Island, are part of an 11-dam system on the Columbia River. The District s third hydro project, Lake Chelan, serves a dual purpose of generating power and regulating the level of 50-mile-long Lake Chelan. The three hydro generating projects produce about nine million megawatt-hours of power each year, enough to meet the needs of a city of more than 900,000 people. Chelan County PUD began providing electric service in 1947 and today it operates electric, water and wastewater utilities.
