Black Hills Power was established in 1941, the year Mount Rushmore was completed. It was formed through the consolidation of several smaller electric suppliers in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The company is an investor-owned utility and part of the Black Hills Corporation family. It is engaged in the generation, purchase, transmission, distribution and sale of electric power and energy. The utility serves 62,000 customers in 11 counties and 20 communities located in Western South Dakota, Eastern Wyoming and Southeastern Montana. Black Hills Power has several district offices and five electric power plants. Its plants are fueled by low-sulphur Wyoming coal, mined by Wyodak Resource Development, a subsidiary of Black Hills Corporation, near Gillette, Wyo.
