Onan generators can be potentially invaluable sources of power for those who like to spend time traveling in their caravans or RVs (recreational vehicles). These small, manageable gas-powered units can provide a wealth of power with the minimum of fuss -- if they are in working order. Looking specifically at the gas-powered models, you have to be conscious of issues such as clogged filters, oil levels and battery maintenance if you want to be sure you wont be left powerless -- literally -- by malfunctions with your unit.Don't forget we also sell and service commercial units as well?Instructions1 Check that the Onan generator actually has enough motor oil to run properly. Screw the dipstick down to obtain the correct oil level reading, in the same way you would for a motor vehicle, and top up the oil with 15W-40 oil.2 Visually examine and test your battery if you are suffering for losses of power or your generator will not start. First, make sure the battery connections are clean and secure as loose or damaged connections can often be responsible for power issues. Then test the battery for power. With a voltmeter, connect the negative lead to ground, and the positive lead to the positive battery cable on the starter solenoid. Read the display it should be showing between 12.6V and 12.8V -- if it doesn't, charge the battery, and if the battery still does not show the correct reading after charging, have the battery replaced.3 Check whether your Onan generator is overheating. Look at the"Coolant Temperature"gauge, and if it is reading upward of"230 degrees Fahrenheit,"the generator will shut down. Check the coolant levels and refill if necessary.4 Clean the filter on your generator if you are suffering from black smoke emanating from the unit during normal operation. Remove the access cover and air filter cover, before lifting out the air filter and cleaning it of any dust and debris which may be causing the black smoke from the exhaust. If the filter is too badly damaged or dirty, replace it.5 Make sure there is adequate fuel if the generator is surging. Look for a leaky or defective fuel line and ensure the fuel pump is operating correctly if filling the tank doesn't solve the problem.6 Check the fuel level also if the unit cranks but fails to start. Examine the spark plugs for carbon deposits and replace them if needed.Give us a call for parts, repair services or for a quote to order one to fit your needs.Contact Greg.
