Established in 1927, the Greater Peoria Sanitary District is a special governmental unit that is responsible for the treatment of sewage and construction and maintenance of sewer collection systems. The district also maintains detailed records of the sanitary sewer system that include maps and sketches of public sanitary sewers and building sewers. The Greater Peoria Sanitary District generates revenue to operate its treatment plant and maintain the sewer system through a user charge billing system. It maintains more than 450 miles of pipe owned by the sanitary district and over 200 miles of pipe owned by the city of Peoria, Ill. The District serves an area of nearly 60 square miles and treats wastewater in accordance with the laws and regulations of the city.
