The Murphysboro Police Department is a law enforcement agency that protects residents lives and property, maintains peace and order, and reduces crime through education, prevention and proactive police services. The department operates a communication center that coordinates response services in daily operations and emergency situations. It offers community-oriented policing, which is a process that involves officers being assigned to various neighborhoods to act as a liaison to residents in those neighborhoods. The department maintains a team of more than 15 full-time and over five part-time sworn officers that responds to approximately 10,000 cases each year.
