Onyx Pharmaceuticals, headquartered in Emeryville, Calif., is engaged in the development of cancer therapies that target the molecular basis of cancer. Established in 1992, its lead product is Nexavar tablets, an oral multiple kinase inhibitor that targets proteins involved in both tumor cell proliferation and angiogenesis. Nexavar has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of patients with advanced kidney cancer. It also has trials underway in advanced primary liver cancer and in cell lung cancer. The company is developing small molecule drugs, including Nexavar, in collaboration with Bayer Pharmaceuticals Corporation. Onyx Pharmaceuticals is also developing a small molecule cell cycle inhibitor, in collaboration with Pfizer.
